Should I Debeard mussels?
Mussels cook quick and taste great with little prep, but cleaning and debearding them is crucial for the cooking process. Also throw away any that don’t open after cooking. Like most fresh shellfish, mussels may still have sand or barnacles on them, so wash them well before cooking.

- Check that all the mussels are closed.
- Scrub the mussels well with a stiff brush under cold, running water to remove any barnacles.
- Cook the mussels according to your recipe and discard immediately any shells that have not opened up.
